Maximize Your Job Search Success:

Tips for New Graduates

Due to social-economic uncertainties, finding a suitable job has become a challenge for many people, especially fresh graduates. So, what can individuals do to find decent job opportunities as well as increase their chances of securing employment in such a competitive market?

Is the Vietnam’s job market shrinking?

Vietnam is currently in the period of the “golden population” with 56.2 million people in the working age group. This is considered a favorable opportunity to increase labor productivity and boost the country’s economic development. However, domestic businesses face difficulties in the context of economic disruption. A specialized report in Vietnam shows that out of a total of 2,734 surveyed businesses, 69.1% have a negative or very negative outlook for the economic prospects in 2024.

To tackle these challenges, many businesses opt to implement cost-cutting measures to enhance competitiveness and maintain profitability during uncertain times. This has somewhat negatively impacted workers. But wait, there’s good news. According to data from ManpowerGroup Vietnam, the recruitment demand for white collars in Q1/2024 is higher than the same period three years ago (Q1/2024). In Ho Chi Minh City particularly, the leading sectors are Manufacturing and Processing (25.51%), Banking and Financial Services (9.04%), Technology (8.28%), and Real Estate (8.18%), as reported by FALMI.

Effective job search skills

During the recent seminar "Labor Market Update & Guide to Land Your Dream Job" at Swinburne University of Technology Vietnam (HCMC), Ms. Dinh Nu Quynh Nhu - Principal Consultant, ManpowerGroup Vietnam shared: "Proactively approaching the job market and building a strong CV is the secret to ‘conquering’ employers in today's challenging context."

Some useful and reliable job sources for fresh graduates and job seekers include recruitment sites of reputable firms, LinkedIn (social networking platform for professionals), company websites, or trainee programs. Young talent should invest in building relationships (networking) and proactively connect with headhunters/ recruitment consultants on social channels and professionals in the desired fields. Networking can open doors to new career opportunities and collaborations that may not have been possible otherwise.

A resume, or Curriculum Vitae (CV), also plays an important role in the job application. Build a professional and tailormade CV and make sure to include key components i.e. personal information, work experience (or activities you have participated in), education, skills, and references (if any).
