Sustainability as the EVP and Green Jobs in Vietnam

Sustainability has become increasingly critical for organizations to remain relevant and competitive in today’s world. Today, sustainability receives more attention by employers and is becoming an integral part of developing corporate strategy. In line with this global trend, Vietnam is heading toward green growth with various industries involved, generating great demand for green jobs and green skills in the labor market.

As defined by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, sustainability means “meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources.” Sustainability for organizations plays out across three areas, in the now well-known acronym for Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG).

In recent years, companies are putting more effort into sustainable business goals. According to Deloitte 2023 CxO Sustainability Report, 75% businesses have increased their sustainability investments over the last year. Meanwhile, climate change is ranked the second most pressing factor for organizations to focus on in 2023.

In addition to its social and environmental impacts, sustainability can be a powerful recruitment tool. Studies reveal that about 70% of employees and job seekers say a sustainability program makes an employer more appealing. 65% of respondents were more likely to apply to a job with a company that was committed to sustainable practices. In other words, repurposing sustainability and social responsibility communications for employees and recruits can increase engagement.

As countries go green, job opportunities emerge. The average job in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, for example, uses roughly two to three times more green skills than the average job globally . APAC countries are also actively involved in the green growth and green recruitment. Nevertheless, despite the great need for green talent and green skills in various industries, the current supplies are falling short of demand.

ESG has long been embedded in ManpowerGroup’s business strategy and our actions across the globe. Andree Mangels, General Manager at ManpowerGroup Vietnam, is excited with the growing demand for “green” jobs in the country “From our recruitment and staffing experience, we see that more and more companies have placed significance on ‘green’ practices in their operation, especially in talent acquisition. We have been actively partnering with both local and multinational corporations nationwide in promoting green job opportunities.”

In recent years, Vietnam has established strong cooperation on green growth with many countries including Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, etc., and international organizations/associations. Notably, Decision No. 1658/QD-TTg on the National Strategy for Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision toward 2050 by the Vietnamese government was officially approved, creating more favorable conditions for businesses nationwide in achieving sustainable development.
