Career orientation for students at middle and high schools is becoming more important and popular in Vietnam. To help students understand their future jobs better, many creative methods have been used and parents have been more engaged in the process. So, what can students do to future proof their career?

Know yourself!

The first and most crucial step in career orientation is knowing who you are. Ask yourself: What are my strengths and weaknesses? What do I love to do? What are my visions or dreams for the future? ManpowerGroup Vietnam expert said that answering these questions, which nobody knows better than you, will help you choose a suitable career and develop your potentials.

Yet, as shared by Ms. Nguyen Kieu Linh, General Manager of FCE Vietnam in the Career Orientation workshop with representatives of schools in Hanoi on November 25, 2023, "We should remember that each of us will keep changing and improving over time. Therefore, for students, finding and truly understanding themselves is a long journey and requires support and guidance from the school, family and society."

Know the market!

The world of work is evolving, in which soft skills are playing an increasingly important role, in addition to professional knowledge. Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang, Head of Manpower Brand (ManpowerGroup Vietnam) revealed in the Career Orientation workshop that 77% of employers globally report difficultly in filling roles – a 17-year high. Besides foreign languages - an essential skill if you want to have a good job in the global context, some of the top in-demand soft skills that workers need in any industry include initiative taking, critical thinking, and adaptability.

The growing importance of skills at work has also changed the way businesses recruit today. ManpowerGroup Vietnam representative said that one of the key trends globally is skills-based or competencies-based recruitment instead of qualifications. 1 in 5 job posts on LinkedIn in 2022 did not require candidates to have a college degree. Companies such as Apple, Google, Starbucks or Hilton are some of the companies currently using this hiring practice.
