SHRM Summit 2022: Speak Up Culture in The Future of Talent

Thursday, 17th November 2022, Mr. Andree Mangels, General Manager of ManpowerGroup Vietnam – as a panelist – joined the SHRM Summit 2022 “Future of Talent: Write our new human-centric story together”. The event was hosted by American Chamber of Commerce Vietnam in partnership with SHRM, Blanchard, and Hogan. SHRM Summit 2022 was aimed at helping business leaders understanding what are the future talent needs and creating strategies to transform their business in the global market.

In an unstable society driven by VUCA, the stories brought on by constant change combined with the growth of Gen Z team members has yet to fully play out. Companies face many difficulties with many new challenges never faced before, business is no longer as simple as it was in the past.

Businesses can no longer predict what will be next year, next month, next week, or even tomorrow, will the fluctuations of today impact our business tomorrow? And are we truly prepared for the impact this will have on our talent? As a business leader, the strategy to attract, retain, and develop talent is of critical importance in today’s business context.

In the first panel discussion on the topic: “Creating Speak Up Culture”, Mr. Andree Mangels shared his opinions and experience when developing speak-up culture within the organization, especially from a cultural differences perspective. According to him, there are certain reasons that Vietnamese workers are reluctant to raise their voice at work, including the power distance between managers and staff, concept of family and seniority, the team-based society, and high context culture. Andree believes that a healthy speak-up culture is about open communication and creating trust inside the organization. People should feel comfortable to share their thoughts at the workplace where speaking up is seen as positive and appreciated.

For enterprises that are new to the concept of speak-up, I suggest setting out on the journey with baby steps. Creating confidential surveys, teaching employees how to speak up, and letting people get used to the practice through speaking up as groups are some of good ways to start”, said Andree Mangels.

Other parts of the SHRM Summit 2022 covered emerging matters related to the future talent such as The Future of DEI –Ensuring Inclusion, Building a Remote-first culture, or Develop GenZ Talent, etc.
