Disruptive thinking for successful leadership in the changing world of work

Disruptive thinking for successful leadership in the changing world of work

Ho Chi Minh City, July 1st 2018

45% global employers are struggling to fill open jobs because they can’t find the skills they need, according to ManpowerGroup’s Talent Shortage Survey 2018 (TSS 2018). This is the biggest talent shortage in the last 12 years (2006 – 2018).

According to the survey, the bigger companies face the bigger challenges with 67% large firms reporting hiring challenges and nearly a quarter say they’re having more difficulty now than a year ago. Specifically, 29% employers say the main reason they can’t fill roles is the lack of applicants, another 20% say candidates lack the necessary experience while 19% quote the applicants lack required hard skills

The situation is the same in Vietnam where the annual unemployment rate is on the hike (2.2% of the local workforce), however, employers find it very difficult to recruit the right talent they need.

To cope with this situation, employers around the world have to recruit outside their talent pools or apply new recruitment strategies against the traditional ones. In other words, they are more innovative or “disruptive” in recruitment as compared to they were many years ago. According to TSS 2018, 33 percent employers are looking at various demographics, age ranges or geographies, using social media to attract potential candidates, or tapping boomerang retirees or returning parents and part-timers.

Within this business context, “Disruptive Thinking” is a new concept that business leaders should apply to lead successfully their organizations in a changing world of work. The seminar “Disruptive Thinking for Successful Leadership” co-organized by ManpowerGroup Vietnam and Maastricht School of Management (MSM) on  July 1st 2018 is aimed at answering the questions: What is thinking and what is disruptive thinking? How can we make practical applications in our careers and personal life? How can we effectively apply Disruptive Thinking to practical leadership and management?

Disruptive thinking is very important to be able to lead through quick and disruptive changing environment. To facilitate disruptive thinking, people should actively think in different or even reversed ways. More importantly, people should apply disruptive thinking more frequently.

Practically, to allow disruptive thinking to lead to successful change, individuals should be ready for change and be ready to lead change. Leaders should also facilitate change process, and be opened to disruptive thinking. During the Seminar, Professor Geert W.J. Heling, PhD from MSM MBA Program and Ms. Huong Nguyen, Country HR Manager of ManpowerGroup Vietnam also unveiled techniques/tips to stimulate disruptive thinking as well as successfully lead change in organizations.
