World of Work for Generation Z in 2025

As Gen Z takes its place in the global workforce, they are reshaping workplace culture, the future of employment, and how we think about careers. By 2030, Gen Z - those born between 1996 and 2012 - will make up nearly one-third of the global workforce. However, their career paths are defined by economic uncertainty, rapid technological advancements, and changing expectations around work-life balance.

The ManpowerGroup Global Talent Barometer sheds light on the unique opportunities and challenges faced by Gen Z workers. Data revealed while Gen Z employees are highly ambitious and eager to develop new skills, many lack confidence in long-term employment prospects. Nearly half (47%) of Gen Z workers are considering leaving their current position within the next 6 months, and many doubt that they can find jobs that meet their expectations.

A Generation in Uncertainty

Gen Zers have career aspirations and work preferences that set them apart from those of previous generations. A survey by Deloitte found that 86% of Gen Z workers prioritize purpose in their careers. Another research from Indeed shows that 45% of Gen Z workers are open to taking on side projects and gigs to expand their skills. Despite their willingness to learn and adapt, Gen Z faces unique obstacles:

  1. Financial Struggles: More than 56% of Gen Z workers live paycheck to paycheck, with an expected annual salary of $170,000 needed to feel financially secure.

  2. Mental Health Challenges: Over half (52%) of Gen Zers report high workplace stress, a stark contrast to older generations.

  3. Job Market Uncertainty: 40% of business leaders believe recent graduates are unprepared for the workforce, citing poor work ethic and communication skills.

  4. The Automation Factor: With AI and automation on the rise, 59% of Gen Zers are seeking roles that are less vulnerable to being replaced by technology.

How Employers Can Adapt For Gen Z

Employers globally are making strides to better accommodate Gen Z's needs. According to ManpowerGroup's Employment Outlook Survey for Q1.2025, recruiting and reskilling Gen Z workers is the top priority for global employers.
