Green Talent: Driving Sustainability

Green Talent: Driving Sustainability

Vietnam, August 24th 2023

The hybrid event, "Green Talent: Driving Sustainability", organized by ManpowerGroup Vietnam and the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam), shared the significance of green skills and green jobs in the forming of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategies for businesses globally. The event was attended by leading HR and ESG experts from multinational corporations, including ManpowerGroup Vietnam, Deloitte Vietnam, and Bayer Vietnam, who came together to discuss how the ESG strategy impacts the business landscape and the world of work.

According to PwC, ESG strategies are no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ for companies in the Asia Pacific. It has become essential for businesses to incorporate ESG in their business strategies in order to drive positive impacts and thrive in the business environment. Leaders must move from good intentions to value creation and accelerate the progression of ESG priorities to differentiate in the market for capital and talent.

Mr. Jonas Prising, Chairman and CEO of ManpowerGroup, said, “We believe our ESG strategy is a winning business strategy benefiting our clients, our associates, our shareholders, and the world at large. To be truly sustainable, our ESG strategy must be embedded in our business strategy. That is how we can focus most on delivering Environment action, modeling our Social impact, and leading with good Governance.”  Companies are already focusing on enhancing their sustainability capabilities – ManpowerGroup’s “The Search for ESG Talent 2022” reveals that the proportion of green talent has increased from 9.6% to 13.3% between 2015 and 2022. It is anticipated that by 2050, the global market will have more than 300 million office jobs that require green skills.

According to Deloitte's 2023 CxO Sustainability Report, up to 42% of organizations see "Climate change" to be one of the most pressing issues to focus on over the next year, just second after "Economic outlook" (44%). Mr. Phan Vu Hoang, Tax Partner & Chief Talent Officer, Deloitte Vietnam, remarked on Deloitte's sustainable development strategy: "Deloitte Vietnam has been carrying out various activities in connection with the WorldClimate Strategy, being one of Deloitte's worldwide initiatives in delivering services to clients to help them achieve the aim of sustainable development, from strategic planning, integrating and addressing sustainability elements in operations, ensuring tax and other compliance requirements, and accelerating the transformation of organizations and value chains. In addition, the identification, development and nurturing talents with “green skills” are always a priority in any agenda and initiative by Deloitte for sustainable development.”

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Huong, Country Human Resources Manager at ManpowerGroup Vietnam, stated, "ManpowerGroup first introduced our ESG report to our clients and partners in 2021. As a leading global company with long-established staffing and recruitment expertise in over 75 markets and territories worldwide, we acknowledge the importance of sustainable development. We have noticed that the number of green jobs and new ESG roles have grown substantially, leading to higher demand for talent with appropriate green skills." According to Ms. Huong, ESG is no longer an aspiration but an expectation of the world of work. She emphasized that today's employees have higher expectations of their employers, a view that is echoed in a report which reveals that 55% of respondents said a commitment to DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) is extremely important when evaluating an employer.

Ms. Cao Le Thanh Loan, Operations Manager, Staffing & Outsourcing and HR Consulting Services, ManpowerGroup Vietnam, shared, "The propensity of sustainable transformation is growing, leading to the higher demand for green jobs. At ManpowerGroup Vietnam, we execute hundreds of permanent and staffing service orders for green jobs. As most of ManpowerGroup Vietnam's clients are multinational firms with a strong ESG strategy, we aim to create sustainable development values while delivering prosperity to corporations, shareholders, and partners."

The highest demand for green jobs worked on by Manpower Vietnam, compiled on over 350 green roles in first half of 2023, so far comes from several sectors, including Manufacturing (30%), Health (20%), Technology (17%), Energy and Petrochemicals (15%), Sales (9%), Agriculture (5%), and Transportation & Logistics (2%), shared Ms. Loan. Meanwhile, the top five ESG roles in demand globally are Environment, Health & Safety (59%), Health & Wellbeing (39%), Corporate Sustainability (39%), Recycling & Waste Management (37%), and Ecosystem & Biodiversity Management (33%).

Mr. Dung Le, Ph.D., Pipeline and Business Enablement Lead- Bayer APAC, Crop Science for Row Crop Seed Production, shared, “At Bayer, we build and implement our ESG strategy basing on UN's SDG guiding principles. We work to ensure "inclusive growth" with partners to realize our vision "health for all, hunger for none" in the context of population growth, demand for protein and pressures on harvests from climate change. We constantly endeavor to "reduce our ecological footprints" in our activities through decarbonization, environment impact reduction, and biodiversity preservation, while acting responsibly along the entire value chain."

Together, the implementation of ESG strategies has helped firms, workers, and the global community in moving toward sustainable development. At the end of the session, Ms. Huong highlighted that the key to success on the path toward that commitment is planning and managing talent with the right set of green skills.
